TARANAKI SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS.
The School Commissioners met on Friday, all the members being present. Mr Wade presided. After some discussion with reference lo the arbitrary taking by the Defence Department of one of the Board's reserves for the purposes of a rille range at Waiwakaiho, it was resolvod on the motion of Messrs. Major and Simpson. "That the Board's solicitor be authorised to arrange for a sketch plan by Messrs, Sladden and Palmer, showing tlic respective characteristics of the land taken, and that Jli F. P. Corkill, as a land valuer, inspect the! land and report lo the Board as to the compensation which should lie claimed.' 1 One of the Hoard's lessees, who had! already a lirst mortgage of t;20l) 011 his I lease, applied for leave to give a second' mortgage of .Clod, at In per cent, (reducible to 11 per cent.) to another mortgagee. The applicant waited 011 Ihe Board with his solicitor, In answer to the Chairman, the applicant said he valued his interest in the lease at £"1500, and his solicitor submitted a valuation by a -competent valuer who valued the improvements alone at £55(1, while the lease has seventeen years to' run at a shilling per acre rental. Mr Major moved, an<l Mr Fftull seconded, " That the Board declines to grat)l the necessary permission unless the rate of interest be rcducc(| to tj per cent, (if punctually paid), and that a certain proviso ii| the mortgage be deleted."

On the Solicitor reporting on or before the lsl of May that all is in order the Hoard's seal will be affixed to the following transfers: Executors ef the late John Wellington to William John andlVd Wellington, as devisees, Section 1, Block 11, Huiroa ; and W. ■F. Hasluek lo J. ii. Kiley, Section 8, Una Village, The Committee (Messrs Paull and Jennings) reported ou the applications of Messrs Carter and Shcflield for the conversion of their leases. They recommended tbat Mr Carter be granted a new lease for the remainder of his present lease at a rental of £lO ]Os per annum with perpetual rights of renewal, and a covenant by the lessee, that he will epect U hou»e to the value of H 250 within two yoars; also that Mr Skellield's present permanent improvements be valued at LIOO, and that he be granted a new lease for tho remainder of his present term at L 3 10s per annum, with perpetual rights oE renewnl as ii| the fopnj of lately approved by the Board, paying in addition tho prescribed rate of interest on the improvements uow valued at LIOO, Tbereconuuoudatioiis of tho Committee wcro adopted.
