The annual communication of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand will be held at Christchurjh 011 May !Hh. The chief interest will be in the installation of Lord Plunkett, the Grand Master elect. One of the matters to be considered is the arranging of a conference of representatives of the Grand Lodges of Australia, with a view to the formation of a council of reference, to whom questions of Masonic autonomy may from time be referred. The jubilee of Oddfellowship in Taranaki will be celebrated next year. The | Loyal Egniont Lodge was established by the Auckland District in 1857, and will next year complete the fiftieth year of its history. Steps will 110 doubt be taken to fittingly celebrate the occasion. The District Ollieers suggested to the annual meeting of Lodge deputies on Thursday, that a special elVort be made to ineren.se the membership to IOUD, and the funds to £20.01)0, ;l s a pari of the celebrations 111 his welcome to the visiting swimmers on Thursday, I [is Worship the .Mayor of New Plymouth said he hoped llie Swimming Club would be assisted by the Borough Council to provide proper seating accommodation at the baths before the next swimming sports, instead of being compelled to huddle the hundreds of people on to a limited number of seats. Old Oddfellows w ill be interested to learn that Grand Master Bro. D. P. Loasby, ol the New Zealand branch, has intimated his intention of paying the New Plymouth district a visit on Ihe 2Stli insl. In view of the fact that the last visit was paid to New Plymouth by G.M. Bro. McLeod, the Executive Ollicers have, in recognition of tin' enthusiasm of Ellhani brethren, and injustice to the southern part of the district, arranged tho visit fo take place at the Eltham Lodge mceling. No belter course could have been adopted, for the Eltham Lodgo is a " go-ahead " institution, aud the attendance will probably be a record one, 'l'he older lodges of the Ortjer will need to wake up, or their claims will be overlooked in matters of this kind in favour of the younger and more progressive ones,

The following letter, over tlio s gnaLui'l' ot' Mr C. T. The Coriuna, which arrived at the breakwater about eight o'clock on Friday morning, and loft the same evening for Onchunga, after landing 450 tons of coal. To-day she loads at that port 800 crates of cheese. She returns to New Plymouth on Monday to take 12,000 boxes of butter and 700 crates of cheese for transhipment to I the Home liner Paparoa, and 700 cases o£ frozen beef for the Ayrshire. Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., is interesting himself in the matter of the free carriage of lime on the railways. At 1 present the Government carries agri- ' cultural lime free on the railways for , a hundred miles, but he considers that - the concession should be extended, so i that there would be no freight, at all on the lime for any distance. At r present, he says, North Taranaki has to pay freight on every bit of lime i used, whilst other districts, closer to f the kilns, are more favorably treated. Failing free carriage oil all lines, Mr x Smith considers it the duty of the Government to open up the limestone de- < posits at llokatl. s There was a good deal of grumbling amongst some local swimmers when Mr ; Lints declared the haudiieaps for s Thursday's swimming sports. That he b hud accurately gauged the capabilities - of the competitors, however, was shown by the excellent racing and close finishes. The best "go" of the day g was in the race for which lie had re- . eeived the most severe criticism, and Mr Lints is to be complimented on his judgment. It is as well to mention t here that much of the success of the t whole meeting is attributable in no c small degree to Mr Lints' energy and enthusiasm.

The New Plymouth District of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity, has had a most prosperous year, the membership being H 75, an increase of 83 for the year. The Loyal Eltham Lodge was responsible for 41 and Kaponga for 13 of the increased membership. Tlie total funds now amount to £18,31.2, being an increase of £1441. The sickness experienced was 982 weeks, within a few days of last year's experience, ami £720 was paid for sickness benelits, as against £7OB last year. £936 was paid for medical attendance and medicine, as agaiust £1)33 last year. The district has every reason to be satisfied with the splendid result of the year's work,

It is not always in the bigger centres of population that the best results are obtained, and this is especially noticeable in Friendly Societies' work. Au instance of this has occurred in Taranaki Oddfellowship in the past year, as is shown by the fact; that out of au increased district membership of 83, the Eltliam Lodge was responsible for 'll, and Kaponga 13 The district ollieers, in their report to the annual meeting of deputies, said : " The energy infused into the work of the Order at.Elth.llll and Kaponga is most commendable, and we trust that during the current year many of the other Lodges may strive to emulate-their zeal and attachment to the Unity." Another portion of the report, reads: " The Lodges are all working well, but the attendance in many cases is not anything like what it ought to be. The attendance at Kaponga was the best, and at lillkam very good," on the occasion of the district ollieers' visit.
