L\ Carlston, licensee of the Provincial Hotel, was lined £5 for a breach of the Act by taking a gold ring iu pledge for a drink from C. E. Burns. The wife of tho licensee had taken the ring, and the defence raised was that she did not occupy the position of servant or agent, but the Magistrate ruled that he always held the inn-keeper was liable for the act of his agent or servant, and a wife stood in that capacity. The Magistrate said if the licensee himself had taken the ring, the license might have been endorsed.
