ISLANDS DEVASTAT

10,000 LIVES LOST. SEVERAL ISLANDS DISAPPEAR. Received 5, 9.50 p.m. New Yoiih, March 5. The steamer Mariposa has arrived at 'Frisco. She reports that a terrific hurricane on the night of February 7th devastated Tahiti and Tuamotu Islands. Ten thousand people arc reported to have been drow ned, and live million dollars worth of damage done. The British and American Consulates at Papieti were wrecked. Five hundred British subjects are m need of relief. Several Islands have disappeared.
