Messrs Bewlcy and Griffiths, dairy produce exporters, New Plymouth, are in receipt of the following market report from their London principals, Messrs Mills and Sparrow, dated January l'Jth, I'JOU :-- Butter.—The dullness that wo reported in ours of the 12th has become accentuated, until it bus developed into almost an entire cessation of business. There are no doubt various causes for this, principally the fact thai butters were forced up too high, whilst the relail prices were n:;l advanced owing to lack of unanimity amongst the big retailers, and no doubt the general election has helped in bringing about the position. Buyers generally have adopted the principle of holding off, and as the Danish market became considerably weaker daily, they decided to wait and Hud out what Copenhagen would do yesterday. The Danes evidently felt this withholding of orders very severely, as they put down their quotation yesterday six kroner (7s), which is quite the heaviest change that has been made for a long time. It has now to be settled what price the New Zealand and Australian butters will steady to, in order to induce buyers to recommence operations, and for the business to resume its normal swing. Danish. The market on this description has been exceedingly quiet. Price in Denmark was forced too high, and orders were stopped t-j a very large extent. Consequently, in order to meet the matter, the quotation was put down six kroner (7s) yesterday. This is a very substantial and sensible thing to do, aud will uo doubt have the effect of considerably stimulating the demand.
French.—No change of any kind in this description during the week, but supplies are light. Russian.—This is also considerably easier in sympathy with other butters, although owing to quantities being light stocks are well cleared. American.—There has been quite a large (juautity of American butter coming in to England during the past three weeks, and this has to a very large extent been undcrpriccd, and had the effect of tilling up the gap that was caused by the advanced prices of colonial and Danish, which prevented any of them being retailed at a prolit of Is per cwt, American came in and tilled this gap, and consequently the demand for colonial descriptions suffered very considerably. Fine creamery in pails has been selling at IOOs to IOOs, whilst dairy factory butters have been selling at ODs to 100s.
Australian.—Demand has been very slow, and prices have gradually cased during the week. A few best brands have been placed to regular buyers, but a large proportion of the market butter is unsold, buyers and sellers not being quite sure as to the correct value. There is no doubt that with the lower prices now ruling the demand will speedily come on again. New Zealand.—There has been no fresh arrival since cur last report. The lfuapehu butters cleared up fairly well, prices commencing at 118s and closing at 114s, the latter being the present level of value. The next arrival is per s.s.. Gothic, which brings 51,000 boxes.
