PERSONAL.

News has been received in Welling ton thai Mr J. C. Gaviu, Assistant-Controllcr-General, who suffered a paralytic stroke while on a visit to Scotland, left London for Wellington, via Suez, last Friday. His health is rapidly improving, and it is expected that he will be able to resume his official duties soon after his arrival. Dr. Valentine, Assist.-Chiof Health Ollicer, was in New Plymouth on Monday, and left by the evening boat for Auckland.

Mr A. E. Farrar, manager of the Old Peoples' Home at New Plymouth, has just returned from a holiday extending over about sixteen days. During tint time he had visited Wellington and Nelson, aud returns feeling very much improved, his health having been seriously affected by mental strain prior to the trip. In his absence Mrs Farrar has conducted the institution, and the inmates have behaved in exemplary fashion.
