A ROTORUA HORROR.
A MAN OVERPOWERED IN A WELL. FOUL AND POISONOUS GAS. A DANGEROUS ATTEMPT AT ItESCUE. TEE MESS ASSOCIATION. Rotobua, February 19. Two men, named Brady and Radford, have been engaged sinking a well about a mile from here. On resuming work this morning, Brady was the first to go down the well. Ho was immediately overcome by foul gas, and fell to the bottom.
Radford sought the assistance of Goodsou Brothers and others. Fred Goodson went down tho well to endeavour to get Brady up, but was no sooner down than he, too, was overcome. Fortunately he had taken the precaution to put a rope round his body, and by this means was hauled- to the surface. He was unconscious, and remains so, being under medical treatment.
Scrgeaut Phair got Brady's body up with grappliug irons, life being extinct. Tbe fumes from the well are overpowering. Brady was a single man, and it is believed his parents reside at Otahuhu. Later. Goodson remained unconscious until five o'clock, but since then ho has improved.
Brady had only descended about 20 feet when he was overcome. It was lucky for Goodson that he was hauled up so speedily. Had it been otherwise he would have succumbed.
