SEVEN OUTBREAKS ON ONE FARM. CORONER'S INQUEST. Mawkjia, February 1). At Hawcra on Thursday, before the Acting-Coroner, Mr M. J. O'Donnell, J.P., a I'oronial enquiry was held into the circumstances surrounding a scries
I of fires which had occurred on the property of Mr Duncan A. I'oole, on Lower Hastings road, Maliipu, between July 1, 11(05, and January 22, I'JIMi. Detective Siddells conducted the case on behalf of the Crown. After a great tlcnl ol evidence hail been heard, the jury returned the following verdict
" The jury are unanimously of opinion that Mr I'oolc's stack of hay, which was burnt on January 22, was wilfully and maliciously set on lire, and we consider from the evidence brought before us tlint it throws grave suspicion on Daniel McL'ilowie as the person who lit_ the lire." Subsequently the jury unanimously asked that the word " maliciously " be excised from the verdict for, upon further consideration, although they
thought the iires hiul been caused wi fully, the jury did not think they hi been maliciously caused. The woi was struck out accordingly.
