RETIREMENT OF SURVEYOR GENERAL.

General in succession lo llr S. Percy Smith, at the latter end of 1!I01. Mr Marchant's connection with the New Zealand Survey Department dates back lo Uic early "sixties." ]„ January, IN/U, he made a .survey of the goldfields boundary in Xclson, in connection willi a cclcbraled dispute between the miners and tile land selectors. In the same year he was appointed assis-tant-Inspeclor of Surveys, and iu LS7S lie was appointed depuly-lnspcclor of Surveys under the .Native Land Ad. A\lieu the General Government lookover the service of the Colony in LS7lii he was appointed lirst grodesical sur. vcyor and three years later lie became Chief Surveyor of Ihe Wellington District and Commissioner of Crown Lands in JNNI. 1,, I!H>| was transferrcd in the same capacity lo Canterbury. and in lKllli again returned to Wellington, still in Ihe same capacities on promotion, and held the position until appointed Surveyor-General in November ISJOI.
The appointment of his successor has not yet been decided, nor has the exact date of his retirement been fixed.
