EUCHRE PARTY.
- <»- - —■ A SI'CCUSSI'TL "FUNCTION. The euchre parly promoted by the Xew Plymouth Bccreation Sports Ground Improvement Committee and held in (he Masonic Hall on Thursday night was a gigantic success. Kvery one of Ihe sixty tables provided, occupying every inch of the available space, was occupied, and a .large number of people was unable to Hud seals. At a mod-rate computation; there were 250 persons present, fully I representative of every class in the (own.
Some slight confusion was occasioned at the start by late arrivals mixing the arrangements up slightly, but after the lirst couple of games, everything went as smoothly as Ihe proverbial marriage bells.
Playing was continued till half-past ten, when Ihe ladies handed round a splendid supper. Afterwards the Chairman, Mr A. Humphries, announced the winners of the various prizes, which were presented to the winners by Mrs Dockrill, as follows:—Ladies' prize: Miss Bos- | worth, 18 games; gentlemen's prize i Mr P. Jury, Hi wins; "booby" (ladies): Miss Maud Cupel played off with Miss B. Watson and secured this coveted award; and Mr Johnstone was the champion at this end amongst the gentlemen. The teams' match, in which twelve teams competed, excited considerable interest, showing that this novelty has caught on. The winning team was Mrs K. Colson, Miss A. C. Pookes, Messrs J{. Colson and P. Jury. MrE. M. Smith,M.ll.li., afterwards made a speech, in the course of which he pointed out the laudable object for which the entertainment was promoted, and commended the committee for the energy they were displaying. He trusted the public would show as keen an appreciation of the committee's efforts in the various functions they propose holding from time to time, until they hadsiillicicnt money in hand to carry out their complete scheme of forming an up-to-date sports ground.
The room was then cleared for dancing, 11 largo number remaining until dispersing time, which came shortly after [one o'clock this morning. Too muck praise cannot be accorded to the energetic committee, of which Mr Tribe was secretary, who carried out the arrangements for this very successful function. The most earnest workers ou the committee were the ladies, who, with Mrs Dockrill, had practically by their enthusiasm anticipated the success. It is expected that there will be a prolit of at least £ls as the result of the party, another of which will be held very slmrllv.
