SHOP HOURS.
l'lilt I'IIKSS ASSOCIATION. Wellington, January 31. The Labour Department proceeded to-day against W. Boss, tobacconist, for failing to comply with the early closing law. It appeared that a requisition was presented to the Minister by a majority of the tobacconists of the city in favour of observing certain hours, and in accordance with the Act the Minister issued a gazette notice. Koss and others failed to observe the hours. The defence was that the rci|uisili,in was not signed by a majority of tobacconists, who were tobacconists only, but that the majority was made u)> of Chinese fruiterers and hairdres. scrs, who sold tobacco and cigarettes. The order, therefore, was bad. The prosecution argued that although some of llnso who signed the requisition carried on other businesses, as well as (hose of tobacconist, still they were tobacconists. •Judgment was reserved.
