The cheese market is quiet, and prices slightly weaker. The high prices arc restricting business. New Zealand cheese is quoted at from 02s to G3s per cwt. The hemp market is active at higher prices. In spot deliveries I lie price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wei. liuglon grade, on spot, to-day, per ton is £33; January to March shipments, C 22, The cocksfoot seed market is firm, with more enquiry at about last price. l'he wool market is active aud prices firm.

Cook, charged with escaping from the Mount Cook prison works when serving a three years' sentence, was to-day sentenced to a six months' further term for escaping, and also three months, concurrent with the present sentence, for theft of clothes subsequent to his escape. Auckland, January 29. A little girl named Dixon, daughter of an Otahuhu settler, was drowned by falling into a tub of water to-day. Nklsox, January 29. Arthur Thornton and Joshua Scholefbld, half-brothers, aged about 20 ami 27 respectively, wore drowned at Upper Matakiki on Friday evening when 'attempting to ford the river on one horse.
