The Premier, to-night, referring to Trade Monopolies, said these were w.irking silently, secretly and surreptii iously against the interest of the producers of the colony. This was a matter that would engage the attention of Parliament. There was also danger from shipping rings. The people of the colony were under the power of two or three companies, and when a n 'w company entered into competition with those companies, it was either driven out or absorbed liy them. Freights from New Zealand were 33 per cent more than from Australia. Rather than allow the country to be under the power of monopolies, tile Slate wjuld have to own steamers mid takes its own freight (applause). Me fell sure that the farmers would support the Government in seeing that justice was done to the colony's produce at Home.
