OPENING THE DUNEDIN UNIVERSITY. l'Eli MKSS ASSOCIATION. Di'xkdin, January 21. Sir llobert Stout, at the opening of the Dunediu University, said he boped soon to bo able to congratulate Auckland on the cm-lion of new suitable buildings for college purposes. This must still further increase the number of University students, but he depreciated the direction of higher education into | mere professional channels. He hoped to see the superannuation scheme for University staffs, as well as ordinary teachers. The Senate was considering whether the money now spout ou the capping ceremonies should not bo devoted to junior scholarships.
Sir ltobert regretted that no students for agricultural degrees had yet presented themselves. He had received u proposal to equip a musical school, and io conduct the examinations noncarried on by experts from England. The year's income was CS.oOO and the expenditure i7,:il)li.
