ELECTRIC LIGHT.

THE NEW PLYMOUTH INSTALLATION. VISIT TO THE POWER-HOUSE. On Friday afternoon, at the invitation of Mr Haes, New Zealand representative of the Brush Electrical Company, contractors for the New Plymouih Borough electric lighting and power installation, an ollicial visit was paid to the power-house at Mangorei, prior to the commencement of the actual distribution of the light. The parly left town at about three o'clock, and comprised: His Worship the Mayor of New I'lymoulh, Mr I!. Cock; Mr E. M. Smith, M.11.R. for Taranaki; Borough Councillors W. F. Brooking (Chairman of the Electric Lighting Committee), F. E Wilson, L. M. Montcalh, C. Ewing, F. Stohr, and D. Hulchen ; Mr llacs, representing Iho contractors; Mr Fenn. for Messrs Steuart & Feun, sub-contractors; Mr Richardson, managing director of the Inglewood Electric. Lighting and Power Company; Mr Howarth, secretary and director, and Mr E. Nops, director, of the same concern; Mr Bleakley, a member of the Glasgow Corporation Electric Train and Light Service; Mr W. Ambury, President of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce; Mr A. W. Reid, representing the Stratford Electric Lighting Company ; Mr Mannering, New Plymouth niaua- • ger of the Uuion Bank of Australasia ; ' Captain Hood, New Plymouth Har- ' bonrmaster; Mr F. T. Bellringer, Town Clerk; Mr Black, Borough Electrician; Mr E Harvey-Gibbon, ' Borough Engineer; Mr S. Edwards, switchboard attendant; and Mr Henry :■ King, from whom the Council pur- . chased the land on which the power--1 house is situated.

By pressing a small lever His Wor. ship caused th.' 21-inch water-main to drive -No. 1 7U li.p. turbine, and the current was turned on. In a few minute; the " load " was taken off, when Councillor Brooking re-illuniin-ated the building by setting Xo. 2 turbine in motion. The working of the plant was explained to several inquirers, after which the company partook of refreshments. The Mayor proposed the health of Mr lines, ami, in doing so, removed part of the sting from his recent public statement, to (lie effect that the Brush Co. was wholly responsible for delay in completing the contract. lie found now that the Council and its consulting engineer bad to share the blame. Mr llaos, in acknowledging the compliment, thanked the Mayor for his generous withdrawal, and stated the installation would be always a credit to the contractors and to the town.
