FARM AND DAIRY.

■ WINTER FEEDING. From the vast amount of winter fodder being harvested from one end to the other of Taranaki this season, it would seem that the farmers are profiting by experience. At almost every farm in this splendid dairying country, harvesting operations fo.' winter feeding are in progress. A huge amount of ensilage is being prepared, whilst of hay and root crops there seems also to be an abundance.

These operations sljow plainly that the da'ry farmer intends not only to 'adequately feed his dairy stock through the somewhat harsh winter T>f Taranaki, but also to continue milkin'; operations all the year round. Aml is there any reason why the industry should not he practised Ihc year through ? Surely if milking operations can be successfully carried on in countries such as Holland, Germany and Canada, New Zealand could do the same; aye, with even more success than in the countries named, as our winter is not so severe as are the winters of those climes.

There is great scope still in Tara-| nalri for improvement in da : ryingj methods. The farmer who is satisfied to carry on mitking operations for only about half of the year is not seeu ing the best results from his farm. There is scarcely a fa"m in the whole province which could not spare, in the summer season ( vlien pastu"e is so plentiful that huge quantities go to waste) sufficient land to grow winter feeding for the milking of a dairy herd right dirough from season to season.
