O'Brien's pair, Grenade and Multifid, returned home by yesterday's steamer, looking none the worse after their exertions at Ellcrslic, ....'-' - Cuneiform's time, lmin 14 2-sscc in the Eleventh Royal Stakes at the A.R.C. Meeting, is a new record for the race. Mr J. 0. "Evett, the well-known handicappcr, is reported to have made an excellent recovery from his recent illness. Jn the Auckland Cup Armistice upoilt what appeared to be a splendid winning chance by running all oyer the course at the distance. The Muhaki mare eventually finisl ed right up under the jjilge'n box, and was very nearly missed by the judge in his placing. - The news of Mr Dan O'Brien's success in the Great Northern Derby ' with Multifid, was received with great enthusiasm by local sportsmen. Auratus established a fresh record for the Awapuni course by running the 12 furlongs in 2min 35scc in the Manawatu Cup. Mr J. O'Driscoll has of late been unlucky when racing at Ellcrslic. It is pleasing to be able to again record the success of the white jacket and green stars on the Northern course. A recent arrival in New Plymouth who has been laying the odds during the last month or two, evidently found the local punters too solid. When his clients rolled up on settling day tin's week to collect Pantutu and Multifid dividends, they found, to their great chagrin, that the bird had flown, This makes, the third flutter within the past eighteen months. The totalisator investments for the four days at the A.B.C. Summer Meeting total £84,272, an increase of £15,852 on last year's amounts. So far this season's workings. The amount estimated by the Chairman as required to be handled to counteract the exelusion of bookmakers was about *30,000. Owners arc reminded that entries for the Foxton B.C. Annual and Gisborne R.C. Summer Meetings close to-day. Quite a number of local sports made the trip to Opuuake races last Monday. The failure of New Plymouth horses in their races must have proved rather unprofitable. Geologist, Jean. Star Rose, Silver Lead, Cyrano, Southern Cross, and Claremont were expected to make a good showing in their engagements, but one after another the " good things " went under. The racing on the whole was moderate, most of the events being won in hollow fashion. The Hurdle Race was robbed of all interest when Geologist and Tambowic fell out, as the mishap left Mawhiti with about a ten lengths' advantage. The roan gelding simply cantered home. Backers of Mawhiti may consider themselves lucky. When the gelding returned to the enclosure it was found that a plate had been partially wrenched off, a piece of metal protruding some four inches. It was marvcllous how the horse completed the (course without seriously injuring himself.
Jean was raado a hot pot in the Flying, but bad no chance against Turnbourina. The Tambour marc is very fit at present. She bopped off the mark, and, getting out in front, stayed there to tbe finish. The favourite finished fourth. Flying Cloud proved too good for Ebbtide in the Maiden. The son of Sou'»ire4cr finished with plenty of dash, Oliver bringing him along with a. fine run at the finish. in tbe Opunake Handicap, Glcnullin again demonstrated what a weak class of liaelcs there was against him by clearing right away from his field, and winning all the way in a canter. The Electric iras reckoned a good thing for Silver Lead. The Sylvia Park gelding was supported to the extent of £133 out of a total of £486. Miss Jack, a nice-looking filly by Uhlan—Ravcnent, who had run third in
the Flying after getting a very ]K>or , ' start, came with a strong run over the \ last furlong, and, cutting down Sport- \ ing Queeu and Silver Lead, won, with something to spare. Miss Jack was neglected on the machine, her twentyfive supporters receiving £l3 2s for .each £l. Only four started in the Welter. .Notwithstanding the fact that TarnbourS»a had pulled off the Flying, the mare wan the least backed on tbe tote, the general opinion being that seven furlongs was beyond her capabilities. Lualla was made favourite, but, although hard ridden from the jump, she vxet got near Tambourina. Makikihi was installed favourite for the Jfcw Year Stakes. She won by a small margin from Claremcut. after a ding-dong go right from the bend to the judge's box, every inch of ground being strongly contested.
Six started in the Filial Stakes, Jea and Kporting Queen meeting with mos rt, The former ran more gener ously than in the Flying, and won comfortably.
The non-success of the local divisionis attributed to the horses getting knocked up by the long journey over the metalled road, having to be walked 40 miles lo Opunake, and then another 7 miles to the course at Pihama. Most of them showed unmistakeable trigus of the strain.
