FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' PICNIC.
Splendid weather was responsible for a record crowd at the Friendly Societies' Picnic at Sentry Hill 011 New Year's Day. It is estimated that fifteen hundred people travelled from >'ew Plymouth by rail, and about three hundred arrived by trains from south. Besides this, there were large numbers who drove or cycled. All day long the officials were kept busy in providing amusement for the multitudes, Mid-day found hundreds, i family parties, lunching in the beautiful native busli, whose shade was most welcome. The Garrison Band discoursed tine music throughout the day. contributing not a little to the enjoyment, Mr W. Sadler, assistant secretary, lmd the bulk of the work on the ground, and is to be complimented 011 his success, whilst the completeness of the arrangements reflected great credit, on the general secretary (Mr J, H, Hobbs) and the committee. Unities of: all kinds wore played all the after, moon. A programme of sports, in which Messrs X. MeTaggai't and A: Lealamt wore judge::, -Air Ole.land starter, resulted as follows; — One mile ISieycle: "Wliittalier (20 yds) 1, Crocket (50yds) 2; live starters. Bnndsmcns' l!:icc. 151) yards: lioljerts (10yds) I, Pcarcc (ftyds) 2; twelve starters. Quarter miie Hal : Julian, (15yds) 1, Hopson (25yds) 2 ; Pliclan (25yds) I): eight starters. Sentry Hill Handicap, 220 yards. Cartwright (2;jyds) 1, Dixon (lSyds). 2, llopsoi) (12yds) :i; the Winner was too easily handicapped, and was never caught. Putting ihi' shot ; L, Mc Isaac (Ui.ti,) 1, A, Hardgpaves (ID,(>)2; 11 competitors, Sack race; A. Fox and Lealand dead heat for first; tli» race was run again, when Fox won by a few inches. Mile flat: Phelan (Hojds) 1, Tippins (80yds) 2, Ward (■loyds) ;i. Six starters; won easily. Ladies race: Miss Tippins 1, Miss Wooding 2. Bicycle slow raee, last home to win : Sampson 1, Half-mile Bicycle: Whittaker (10.yds) 1, Bell (scratch) 2, Crockett (25yds) II Kicking Football: Hardgraves 1. Halfmile flat. G.
