PATEA BAR AGAIN!
THE STEAMER KAPITI AGROUND. BOXES OF BUTTER ON THE BEACH. A report was ci' Tent in New Plymouth on Monday that the steamer Kapiti, outward bonnd from Patea with a full cargo of butter for transhipment to tie Gothic for the Home markets, was in trouble again at the mouth of the Patea River, The Telegraph Office nt Patea being eloMil, it was a matter of difficulty to obtainprtnfirmation of the report. In the evening, however, we found that Mr F. P. Qorkill, Lloyd's agent at New Plymouth! had received advice t'l'om Welliiigtca that the vessel was aground'on the bar at Patea, and that the cargo of butter was being discharged oil the beach. Particulars of the cargo are not available, but we gather that Lloyd's underwriters are interested to the extent of £II,OBO. Mr Corkill leaves by the express train this morning for Patea to make enquiries. Owing to the original message having been sent to Wellington, Lloyd's advine did noo ' reach New Plymouth in time for the 'l'aranaki agent to go south yesterday. From another source it has been ( earned that there was an unusual ae- | cumulation of butter at the Patea Freezing Works, owing to the Kapiti - having been ashore for some days at Christmas timo, having taken the ground on entering the river, There ' would probably be about 9000 boxes stored, but it is unlikely that the Kapiti would have more than 0000 boxes i aboard, that being about her full complement. The Gothic sails from Wellington on Thursday, and the butter will probably miss this passage, as it will have | to be re-frozen, and perhaps re-boxed,
