ALLEGED STABBING AFFRAY.

IS AX INJUSTICE BEING DONE ? On Tuesday afternoon, two men, F. (t, Lowe and J. McCracken, had an altercation iu the Taranaki Hotel about an alleged loan of live pounds by Lowe to McCracken. who was accused of endeavoring to escape repayment. The latter denied any knowledge of the transaction, and argument led to blows. The men were separated, but met again.

McCracken. whose head vras injured, subsequently made a statement to the police, and in consequence of this Lowe was arrested for assault with intent to do bodily harm.

On 'A edncsday morning the accused was brought, before Mr C. H. Bellringer, Justice, and formally remanded nuti! Thursday, 4th January, at 10.30 a.m. Bail was fixed at £'so, and the surety was provided by Mr I!. W, Dixon, butcher, in whose employ Lowe has been engaged for fire or sit years. McCracken lias been knocking about the town for four or five months. Lowe has the reputation of being an inoffen. siTc, good-natured and quiet young man, and the allegation that he rpade nse of a pocket knife on McCracken is scouted by those who kno\r him best.
