EDUCATION BOARD.
The Board resumed on Wednesday morning. Present: Mr J. Wade (chairman), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Adlam, McDonald, Monkhouse, Fanll, and Morton. Tho architect was in attendance, and his report was adopted. The matter of repairs to tho Opunake residence was left in the hands of the chairman and architect. The Selection Comaiittce was empowered to make recommendations with regard to the vacancies to be adTertiaed on December 21st. The parents of children attending the Upper Kent Road school petitioned the Bood, asking that the present defective chimney there should be pulled down and a good oie built. Atpreaent in south-westerly weather the smoke " limply pours about the room, to much so that the fire has to be immediately put out, leaving the school the whole day in the bi.terest weather without a fire, and when tl e.e is taken into consideration the slort distance from the school to the snow-hnc in winter, your Board will ag ee to the rea(onableuess of our request." Mr 'Warren presented the petition, and was informed that the matter had been referred to the chairman and architect. The Stratford School Committee asked the Board to subsidise the public subscriptions for the purpose of laying a tennis coor; for girls at the Stratford District High School. The committee will be informed that the Board has no funds for such a
Opunake School Committee asked for information as to necessary step* to be taken to make the Opunake school a district high school.—Referred to the Chief Inspector for his Teport. Mill Edwards, teacher at Mangorei, wrote: "I am very sorry to find that, contrary to all my hopes, I shall be unable to continue teaching on account of my eyes. I beg to resign my position of sole teacher at Upper Mangorei, and trust you will find a more capable teacher to tike my pla-e. I sincerely thank the Taranaki Education Board and inspectors for all their put kindness to and consideration for me while in their service, and wish them every success in the future. It is not without much regret that I send in my resignation, and if at any future date I mm able to take up teaching again I shall eertainly »sh to return to Taranaki.—Believe n e to be, etc., Maby P. TUc resignation was accepted with regret, and Mi as Edwards will be informed that if it any time she decide# to re-enter the scrviee, an endeavour will be made to find a vacancy for her. Miu F. Kigby, teacher at Elthaui Hoad School, forwarded a claim for £i 16s Bd, travelling expenses from Canterbury. The Finance Committee recommended that the Board pay half-cost of a Dover stove (£2 limit), and that a new ' window be put in the residence at Upland Bond; that 30s be granted towaiji* cost of painting shelter shed at Lincoln Boad; that, on Mr Morton's favourable report, the Board grant lis, cost of renewal of basins at Egmont » Village school; that the chairman be anthorued to have the in Matau residence renewed; that tenders be called for painting school buildings at Awatuoa, Te Kiri, Frankley VMi, Mat«u t Bowan Koad, Waionjpwa,Pihams, aad Stratford (infants); thai the eluurmaa be authorised to hire sathes re-painted at Denbigh Jioad School—Report adopted. Mr Dcmpsey, head teacher at the CcDtral ; School, asked that a new range fcc installed in his residence.—A range be supplied on the usual condition*. the Board's share not to exceed £3.'
