Gieuohne, December 20.' / A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was returned in the caso of Bernard William Finch. 111 his dying statement he wrote:— " I have become an idiot through under-mining my health. I could always work hut acted mail. I came first of all from England from a good. Catholic family, but threw up my religion and thought I would ho a free thinker. The punishment is just. I was proud (a God and man. That is the punishment sent by God. I thought ! was as clever as any man. Don't pity, hut blame. It is all my own fault. Everybody I met 011 the road was ve,y kind. Ail inquest oil the body of Gooi'gc Wallace, who shot himself u\ the bar of the Oriental Hotel on Monday evening, was held t hiu afternoon. Evidence was given that i,eceased occasionally I (tank for a week 011 end, and used to get very, despondent. He had a bout of that kind about a fortnight ago, and was very melancholy at times. He' was addicted to sitting alone and brooding, aiu\ an opinion was expressed by one witness that he was insane. | Ofljer evidence was given showing tliut during the past fortnight deceased had been very depressed, tfhd when spoken to about the Christmas holidays had remarked; —"I'll be taking a pretty long holiday soon." The jury returned a verdict of suicide ■ duriag temporary inanity.
