NEW SOUTH WALES COAL CONTRACTS.
EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. ALLEGED BRIBERY REPUDIATED. Received, 12, 11,17 p.m. SydneY, December 12. The Railway Commission took further evidence as to the Western Coal Contracts. Mr Wilton, u director of the Litligow Coal Association, characterised the suggestion, made in Parliament, that the Association spent money to secure railway contracts, as outrageous. No attempt was made to influence anyone by bribery or anything else, and no p lyment, direct or indirect, was ever made to any of the officials of the ltailnay Deportment connected with the acceptance or contin< anca of it contract for supply during the past five years, He admi ,ted they got higher prices from the Railways than from private buyers, but stated this was due to competition with Mines outside the Association. If the Association could put this com- 1 petition down it would do so. The Railways paid a higher price because they were unable to get the coal they wanted elsewhere.
