Mat.uka, June 22, 1905. Me Tiiomus Ayson.

Dear Sir, —In reply to your inquiry as to the effect of Prohibition on the Borough of Mataura, being Mayor for the last two years, I have had every opportunity of judging as to the results, and I have no hesitation in saying that Prohibition has tended in a very large measure to the moral and financial welfare of this borough. What under license was a common sight to sec, a druuken man on the streets, is never seen now; indeed there have been but two cases of drunkenness before the Bench during the period of Prohibition, and one of these hjs a man (a stranger) who got off the train drunk. Business has improved all round. Before Prohibition we could not support one fruit shop nor one fish shop; now there are two fruit shops and two fish shops. Building has been brisk, because a number of working men have provided themselves with homes, and property generally has gone up in value 25 per cent. There are no vacant shops, not otic empty Ihujc, and no men cut of employment, and several men I have spoken to who voted for License last election inform ir.<> that next election they will vote for Prohibiten.—Yours truly,
