CHARITABLE AID ADMINISTRATION.

CIIIUSTCIIUIICII '1 ItOUBLES. (I'or I'ross Association.) CHKISTCHUUCH, Nov. 10. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Boaul to-day, Mr lbidrlili' moved : " That the question relating to pensioners'instalments bo further considered, and that the old age pensioners be granted a shilling a week." It was only fair, he thought, that they should give the old people a little money now that the pension had been increased. After some discussion, the chairman moved an amendment that the matter be allowed to stand over, so that u legal opinion might be taken. Several members objected to the proposal to give money to pensioners in the Board's institution. The amendment was carried. It was decided to ask Parliament to introduce a short Bill empowering the Board to dispose cf the original sites of the Old Men's Homes at Ashburton and Lyttelton. " The chairman explained that there was no intention of selling the Board's reserve. They desired to sell the old sites, but could not do so unless they gave the freehold.

The recent trouble in connection with the Orphanage came up again, the matter being introduoed by a letter from the matron stating that the two girls concerned had been taken to the Convent Orphanage, The chairman said it appeared that his action in regard to the imiuiry had been misunderstood, Information had been sent from (Jhristehtirch to Ashburton to the effect that he had not done what he ought to have done, and statements were made that tho children at the Orphanage were not treated as they should be, Tho whole Catholic community in Ashburton had voted against liitu the previous day at the Council elections, and as a result he had lost his seat, The Catholics appeared to think that he ought to have dismissed the matron straight away, but he was onl) one man and not the Board. As soon as he received information about the matter he left his business and came to Christchnrch to enquire into it. A motion was "carried unanimously expressing entire confidence in the chairman and the action he took in the matter.

A case was broiigltt under the notice of the Board where a lady living intha vicinty had been harbouring children from the Orphanage in her house. It was decided that ins '.ructions be giver, to the children that they must not go to any house without llrst obtaining th-i consent of the matron. PROrO,S!iD MATERNITY HOME DUNKDIN, Nov. 10. The Charitable Aid Hoard to-day r e " eeived a deputation consisting of Dr s ' Ba'.chel >r and Hocken, who urged th e establishment of a inaternity home fo 1 tlis poor and homeless. It was resolv" el to rd'er the matter to the favourable c<v, ibidem tiqn of thu now Board, t .is 1 oing tho lust nice: ing of the present Board.
