hi tlm House 10-day, Sir Joseph Waul made a statement with regard to the increases it Was proposed to make in the pay of railway employees It was, he said, intended to grant an increase of sixpence per day; tu shunters, pollers, labourers, cleaners,, platelayers, linemen, and many other low-grade workers, and an Increase of one shilling per day lo surfacemen. This would all'ect -131)1) men. In addiction, it was intended to grant to ciigiinemen, firemen and guards, etc., an wglit hours' day, instead of iiimv hours. Other concessions would also! he made, and in the future all the men in the railway Workshops would he paid fortnightly instead of monthly. The Utter concession alone involved an extra vote this year of ,£!)51HI, and the total concessions represented a sum of £63,973 per annum. He considered this large increase fully Justified, and it met! with the unanimous approval oi the 1 Cahi ;et.
