Who succeeds to the property of a slave ? was to-day a Question for decision by Chief Judge Seth-Smith and .Judge Jackson Palmer, of Hie Native Appellate. Court. During the, Alaorii raids upon one another many |>er.sons were captured, ami nob' killed or eaten, tint wore then made slaves. Often one 'of these slaves was a chief or son of a great eltiuf of another utbe. In the course ol tftue great friendliness would (spring up between these slaves and their owners, ami an owner would often give a sluve a tract of land to live upon if the slave married one of t'ho tribe of his owner. Then his children succeeded to his properly in that tribe .tthrougtt 'the right derived from the person ; of that tribe who married a. slave ; Imt in the present ca-so a slave, who hail received land from his owner, died without issue, and his adopted chili I claimed to succeed. The descendants of tire owner of the slave, i-however, claimed 'his property, because their people owned tho slave, who left no issue, ami the. slave's, property 'bclongvd 'to thorn, according to the law of 'the llauraki 'district.
