A PACKET LICENSE CASE
TWO MEN FINED FOR SAME OFFENCE, (Per Press AssoclalienO AUCKLAND, Sept. 29, Robert (ioodison, formerly a steward on the coastal steamer Kotiti, was charged with having broken the conditions of the steamer's packet license l]jv selling' liquor to one ,l|oterson, while the vessel was attached to a wharf at Wia'ipu, on Aug. 20. The . captain of the steamer, as the holder of the license, had already boon lined in respect to the )samc offence. Goodison pleaded guilty. The Magistrate to defendant : "I suppose you were in th s position, that although the license is in the skipper's name you buy drink and make a profit on fit yourself?" ! (ioodison : "'Yes." Hub-Inspector lilack ''This man lvad instructions from the captain not to sell lirjuor while the vessel was at the wharf." The Magistrate : "I lined liio captain fairly .'heavily. As a matter of fact you were the cause of his getting into trouble. It is n "question whether these packet licenses will be continued or not; if this 'goes on they certainly will not be. I am satisfied that a pretty liviely and -disgraceful j stato of things Trent on once at Waipu, where there are no no hotels, and people used to get liquor from the steamer." The Magistrate! described the offence as a mean one, as the captain had been fined when. it was not his fault. He fined Goodison £lO and costs, or a month's imprisonment.
