NOTES BY "MOTUHOA."Mr (iood, being interviewed on his return from Australia, commenting on Maniapoto's performances states that in the Epsom, .Sleeper got an initial advantage of about a couple of* lengths, and that Maniapoto was asked to go straight lo business, but seemed to slip on the sun baked turf. The aluminium shoes he wore failing, in Mr Good's opinion, lo; give him a good, grip of the track, whereas on his next appearance lie raced on steel plates with raised heels in which he acted well. Mr Good does not blame lire horse, or rider, hut considers that it was nothing but an unfortunate mistake that lost the Tantnaki represenllartives the though he also thinks that the son of Sou It had had a hurried and an interrupted preparation, and could be made better and more seasoned. He still holds that,, despite this and the fact that Maniapoto sweated profusely before lie ran each time, he would certainly have won il the plates he wore on the second day, when lie. won the Metropolitan Handicap. The suggestion that the horse is a quillet he will not have for a moment and he accounts for the failure oi Maniapoto in the weight-for-age race on his third appearance in that he was meeting better horses and that Jones would have done better had he allowed him to, run along, instead of resting him and getting his head in the an, as he was in the habit of getting it when galloping with slow !n > 'races"' NW Zealand ' » No horse could have come out and raced more brilliantly than he did when asked to come away from tashoda in the Metropolitan. Mr Good, who is the business man of the syndicate in -the ownership of
Maniapoto, refused lo entertain any ofleis for the horse, and tho, ugi» l-'U'ssed to sell by Mr Glenn's representative, who held a power o[ attorney, would not Uar of such a Ihing, and, with Mr Curtis, the se- i cond partner, backed Maniapoto for the Melbourne Cup, and decided to withdraw him from the New Zealand
01 which he had also -backed I t horse Nor only did Mr Good p. , tllls i course, -but lie bought Mr s '"terost out at a figure representing double (lie original cost, Mamapoto will have a careful prcpai,i.tioti lor l lie Melbourne Cup. Ha .loins K McNamara's stable. Referring jo the time records at the Australian J.C. Meeting, the following is of interest. It appeal's that noises practically get a flying start as the barrier is erected well back rom tho starling post, a, white lias being used to ' indicate the precise momrni the horses are at, the start"ig post. It is reckoned that quite two seconds are gained in this way. The totalisator turnover for Hie Rangiiikci Spring meeting amounted 10 £8983, which is an increase of £1731 compared with last season'sfixture- This sum would have been auibstantiaUy increased if the club had been favoured with fine weather. Several owners would not risk their horses on tile heavy track. Machine (inn's name figures among the entries for the C.J.C. Jublice Cup and Stewards Handicap. He is 011 board the Moeraki due to-dav. Ranana cut his stifles l wheir ho stiuck the fence in the steeplechase l at Avondalc last Saturday. Soult-'s progeny were strongly -in evidence -at the Annulate Spring meeting.. ' a
It is unlikely that tlic cx-crack Noiicllc will stand a Cup preparation. The son of Soaton Delavel was bleeding at the nose ■when pullc'd up' after running ia the Spt-in-g Handicap,
at Bulls. ] The Avondale J.C., totalisator returns showed a shrinkage of £2558 compared with last year's spring meeting. Satanella, dam of Sr. Paul, St. Ursula ami St, Olga, has produced her sixteenth foal—a filly to Soult. The mare is now in her twentyfourth year. Mahutonga has been freely entered for the chief events to be Uecidul at the New Zealand Cup meeting, so it would appear as i'f his connections had not yet derailed on making the trip lo Victoria ibis spring. It is stated that F. Jones has severed his connection with the Yaldhurst stable, and that he will ju»ncy to Melbourne to ride Maniapoto in his Victorian engagements. Mr Stead's three-year-old Cunei-i form (by Multiform—lllucfirc) is expected to leave for Hastings on Wednesday to fulfil his engagement- in the Uawke's Bay Guineas. I fancy ho will prove, very hard to beat. The declaration' of weilglits for Wellington spring meeting has been postponed until October 6, to enable Mr Clvadwick to sec the Hastings form before declaring his handicaps. Some surprise has been expressed in sporting circles at Mr Chadwick onlyi being appointed for the spring meeting, instead of for the season.
