immu w SATISFIED Intense Indignation Manifested (Received Sept. 24, 4.81 p.m.) TOKIO, Sept. 28. Iwichi, the captain of the Mikasa, tried to commit suicide by jumping from a window. He was seriously injured. Of forty memorials to the Mikado from individuals and associations, uvgmg him not to ratify the peace treaty, the most conspicuous address was signed by six professors of the Imperial University, absolutely condemning the treaty on the ground that it annuls the purpose of the war as stated in the declaration of hostilities. Moreover it is pregnant with elements of humiliation and future danger to the nat ; onol interest"!.
LONDON, Sept. 23. Keuter reports that intense indi nation exists amongst influential men at Ihe revelation of the treaty, which bin's Japan not to fortify La Perouse Straits, despite Kataura's assurance to the contrary. It is considered the moit intoleiuble indignity ever inflicted on the country which has never been defeated.
