Scratched—Apologue, The winner got none too well away, but was up with the leading division half a mile from home, and ultimately won his race in businesslike style by two lengths. Steeplechase.—Up-to-date 1, Dingo 2, Middlerise 3. There were nine starters. Betting 5 to 2 against Hay,-, dn, 6 to 1 the winner. Bosun and Dingo led for a time, when Up-to-Date went to the front and won easily ivy, a dozen lengths. Time, 7inin l£sce. Haydn ran off. Waver ley Handicap.—Scot Free 1, Bromine 2, Elvo 3. Final Handicap.—Lacknow 1, St. Modan 2, Fashoda 3, Won by a length. Time, 2min Bsec. A POPULAR WIN, (Received Sept. 18, 1.10 a.m.) SYDNEY, Sept. 17. Nightfall's victory was followed iby a great popular demonstration. The cheering commenced on. the horse passing the distance, swelling to a continuous shout as he swept past the* post, and renewed when he returned from the weighing stand, many thou- - sands joining in the scene. There was much enthusiasm, lasting several minutes, calling to mind the welcome accorded to the Melbourne Cup winner. STAKES WOX BY NEW ZEALAND HORSES, (Received Sept. 17/ 4.-10 p.m.) .SYDNEY, Sept. 16. The sun of £OIO6 for prize money in the recent races to New -Zealand. Mr Stead takes £3570, Mr H. Good, the owner of Manirfpoto, £2222. Mr Stead's horses leavo by the Moeraki, ! a claim for,damages. BLENHEIM, Sept. 16. A case, interesting to shippers of horses, was decided here to-night after a lot cf evidence. A. Bore claimed from the Union Steamship Company £l3l in respect of injuries sustained by bis racing mare Blue Rose while being shipped from Picton to Nelson in March last. Judgment was given for £4O and costs, and the company was given leave to appeal.
