A young man named Thomas Lomns has been admitted to the New Plymouth Hospital from the Tongaponitu district. He was working on nn embankment on the uppen Okau Road when, without warning, the ground upon which he was standing subsided, and he slipped down a distance of no or 40 feet. Sheep-worrying by stray dogs is it'ill going on in the Stanley Road district. On Monday night Mr C. 11 Christianson found twenty-three cf lis sheep killed and a large number maimed. This sort of thing spells ruin to men with small flocks, and the sooner the owners of dogs recognise their duty to keep them on their chain the better it will be for all concerned. There is some talk of a Vigilance Committee being set up to deal effectively with the trouble.—Stratford Post.

A genial DUlcher, named Sydney Martin, was arrested on August 22, in Melbourne, on a charge of insulting behaviour in very peculiar circumstances. He appeared at the City, Court to answer the charge. Constable Bcrkery, who arrested accusn .d, deposed "At aliout, 7.30 p.m. on 21st inst. I was on duty in Latrobe street. I saw accused kissing a woman and pulling her into a right-of-way, also tearing the lace which was round her neck. When I spoke to him, he said, 'I don't care for you ; I will report you to T. K. Bennett, J.P., and Mr Panton, as they are both particular friends of mine.' The woman said accused was no relation to her, so I arrested him. Accused, on oath, said : The woman I kissed is my wife.
