The Anglo-Japanese Alliance.
Closer Ties: Greater Hazards
liONDON, Sept. 1,
Commenting on thq Anglo-Japan-ese treaty, the Daily News says : "Liability to interveneJCwhether we liked it or not, was one for which (he Liberal Party was in no way responsible, and must be credited—whether for gain or loss—entirely to the present Government. The alliance of 1902 would have been assured of renewal by the Liberals, but if the now bargain has drawn ug tighter the hazard is greater, and our commitments in the East—financial, naval, and military—must claim very considerable attention for years."
Soino newspapers give the new treaty as covering the status quo the Tar East ; others use the word "Asia." ft is generally believed the arrangement covers India and Petal*.
