A Defaulting Accountant.
Committed for Sentence.
(Pit I'res; Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 30. The late accountant of tlie Auckland Racing Club, Percy A. Dawson, who was arrested at Fiji, was charged this afternoon in the Police Court with having stolen the sum of £2938 the money ot the club. The secretary of the club gave evidence that accused's duties were to keep the books and accounts, paying into the bank from day to day. His salary was £151) per annum. Accused handled a fair portion of the club's lotalisator and gale receipts and fees. Some time ago witness inadc an attempt to check the accounts, but the auditor would not allow him to do much With the books. The amount of money passed through accused's hands would be from £40,000 to £50,000 annually. A report from the club's auditor, Mr Isaacs, submitted to the committee of the club on July 21 was produced by the solicitor for the defence. lu it occurred the following paragraph "The books li&ve Dccn kept in a neat and most satisfactory and thoroughly up-to-date style, Dawson, the accountant, having given me every assistance in the performance ot my auditorial duties."
W. H. Cliurton produced his report upon an audit of the club's hooks and stated that they disclosed a deficicnicy of £2938.
Accused pleaded guillv, and was committed fur sentence, hail living allowed, and forthcoming, himself in £loou and two sureties of ijuoo each.
