| | JAPANESE TRANSPORTS LOST. GREAT SECRECY. DISTRESS AMONGST THE POOR. (Received Aug. 24, 1.9 a.m. BRISBANE, Aug. 23. Passengers by the Taiynan, from Japan, state that the Japanese recently sußered great loss in transports, several ol which struck mines entering Port Arthur. The Government hushed up the matter. Great secrecy is observed in transporting troops and guns, this being chiefly done at night.
Considerable distress exists among the poorer classes, owing to the war.
The people arc confident of victory, and the military authorities arc opposed to peace.
