A targe circle of friends will luartt with regret of the death 'of Mr Henry Smith, which took place on Saturday at his residence, Junction Koad. Mr Smith w a s 72 years of age. Th« funeral leaves his late residence at noon to-day for IV-1 Henuj Cemetery. The d'iplomus won by hcadteacher a t the West, End School, at the New Plymouth Exhibition wore publicly presented to her by the Chairman of the School Committee on Thursday last. Several ot her pupils also received their diplomas on the same occasion. The applause which greeted the recipients Was very hearty.

Last week Mr A. Mcllardy, manager of the Newton (Auckland) I branch of tho National Hank, who has„been transferred to New Plymouth in succession to Mr Wastney, Was the recipient of a gold watch and chain for himself "and a salver for Mrs McHardy, at the of a number of the tank's customers.. Mi IJ. Farrell, Mayar of Grey Lynn, made the presentation.

Tne dea,th occurred at Dunedin last weok of Joseph Lo Keong, a wellknown Chinese resident of Dunedin, at the age of seventy-one. Deceased came to New Zbaland forty years ago, and entered into business in Dunedin, where he was widely respected. He married thirty-twp years ago, and his family of three 'sons and throe daughters are all in good positions. One son is a dentist in Tiinaru, and the eldest daughter is a successful teadher of music in Dune din. Lo Keong was an elder of tho Chinese Church in Walker Stseet.

The Chairman ol tho West End | School Committee, Mr 11. J. Gilbert, was on Thursday evening presented with a handsomo silver teppot, suitably inscribed, in recognition of his services in furthering the educational work of the district. Mr Hurle, in making the presentation on behalf of tho well-wishers of the school, gave a short account of Mr Gilbert's worlo, and , congratulated tho householders on hav|ig such an excellent man' as Mr Gilbert as Chai.Tiian of the Sch'oiol Committee. A very handsome gioW and greenstone (brooch was also presented to Mrs Gilbert. Boh gifts were suitably acknowledged by MiGilbert. This pleasing ceremony took place at the close of Mr Tisch's lantern exhibition <i,t the South Road Hall, and those present were very enthusiastic B thefr applause.
