BBIDAY, AUGUST 18, 1905. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. The Criminal Code Amendment Bill and Mutual Fire 'lnsurance Bill passed the final stages. The Maori Land Councils Bill Hissed through QooiimitLee. HOUSE OF RBPHESENTATIVES. The House mot at 2.30 p.m The Workers' Dwellings Uill<w&s introduced by Governor's Message. The House went into Committee of Supply for further consideration of the Estimates, the Justice Department vote being on first. A lengthy discussion took plaoo on the statui and salaries of Magistrates. The House resumed at 7.30 p.m.
The question of tho status, salaries ■ind tenure of Magistrates was discussed until nearly midnight. A motion by Mr Masscy to reduce the total vote by £1 as an indication that the tenure of ofHcc of Magistrates should be placed on a more satisfactory footing was lost by 34 to 27.
Mr Sjjddon said no good cause had been shown for a. change in the existing condition of things, unid Magistrates felt themselves Jruitc independent.
