The Voucher Scandal

Messrs Taylor, Bedford, Laurcnson and Fisher addressed a very large meeting in the Town Hall to-night. The proceedings were most orderly throughout, each of the speakers receiving a cordial reception and a quiet hearing. The speeches were on lines similar to those delivered by the same speakers on the platform and in the House on several occasions during the last fortnight. Mr Taylor, among other things, urged reform of the land laws, the establishment of cottage homes for waifs and strays, and revision of the tariff.

Mr Bedford spoke in favour of the Elective Executive, and condemned the present constitution ol the Legislative Council, and advocated the referendum with the power of initiative iin the hands of the people. Mr Laurenson said the New Liberal Party had determined 10 insist that jail vouchers on which public money jWas disbursed should be open lo inspection by member; ■>■ the House.

Mr Fisher dealt principally with 'the voucher charges, reviewing and criticising the actions ami speeches of the Premier on the subject in the House during the last few davs. He characterised (he Auditor-General's investigation as a ".Star Chamber " inquiry, and announced that the three civil servants Whose names were 011 the affidavits would give evidence, indemnity or no indemnity. The following resolution was carried practically unanimously with cheers: "That this ni.etitrg is of opinion that the best interests of the colony justify the formation of the New Liberal Party, and wishes them success during the session and at the comm 5 general election.
