An Act of Bravery.
A presanfcation for a notable act of ibrave.y was made recently at tho ofTicj of tho Lake View Con bis, Kaigoorlie (West Australia), when Mr W, J. Loring, acting on behalf of the chairman of directors, Mr Govatt presented Edward Nichols, a miner in the employ of the company, with u gold watch and chain, and a chi\pi< Fur Juso. Some months ago a miner, Sauiucl Bcntley, was working in a stope on tho 1200 ft level, and ui'tor assisting in a'va'rging a round of holes with dynamite, was in the act of retiring to the level below for safety, when one of the charged holes exploded. Nichols, who was a few feet further down tha,n Mentley, was partly sheltered from the force of tho explosion and was noit injured- Ho called out to find if anyone was hurt, and, hearing his injured comrade's call for help, ho courageously groped his way back, and rolling n big stone off lientley, succeeded, at the peril of his life, in getting his fatally injured comrado down, to the level iroin .the slope. At the coroner's inquest, tho jurjl commenced Nichols for his plucky act, and asked that it be ! brought under the notice of the Itoyal Humano Sbciety. That society, however, could not recognise the easy because it was neither a rescue from drowying, nor from suffocation from gas in mines.
