CANDIDATE'S POLITICAL ADDRESS.
(Per Press Association.) TIMARU, Aug. 8. Mr. F. L, Rolleston, solicitor, son lot tiie late Hon. W. Rolleston, addressed a crowded meeting to-night in the theatre, as a candidate at •the next election,' IJe was received with applause, He opposed the present Government on the grounds of their administration, and was not in favour of the repeal of the existing legislation, but anticipated that amendments would be necessary from time to time with changing circumstances. On the land question lie favoured giving life settlers the freehold at the original valuation, He consideron the Education Department require cd re-organisation, and deprecated he present tendency to centralisation. Mr Rolleston said he was opposed to the Bible in schools and to the referendum on the subject, ami to the referendum in general. He ativocated reform of the Civil Service through an 'independent board, ami the independence of Magistrates also reform of the Legislative Council preferably by election by both Houses. He complained that the I üblic Works Fund was not properly administered, -and said the remedy was lire extension oi live powers of jocaj bpdips. (he licensing question he would leave the law as ft is with the present powers in the hands ol the people. Mr Rolles ton had a warmly svmpa-, llictic meeting, there being much applause and frequent cheering. A vote of t'lianlis and confidence Was eari led by a large show of hands at i the close.
