Street Widening and Values.
■ 0 A Compensation Case. (Per Ptess Association.) MASTERTON, Aug. 4. A sitting of the Compensation Court was held to-day before the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) and Hon. T, K. Mac Donald and Mr D. J.Cameron, assessors, when a claim of the Master-ton Borough '-Council against Messrs Staples and Co., Wei, lington, for £660, was 'heard. Tho case was the first of its kind in the colony, and was a claim for compenpensatton in connection with widening Bannister Street, which it was claimed increased the value of the properties in the street. Messrs Staples and Co. owned the Club Hotel, over which the case is. 'All the other property owners on the same side of the street agreed to pay compensation. Under the Act the Council had power, where land was taken on one side of a street for widening to claim from owners on the other side the amount of street enhanced value of such property. After considerable evidence was heard, the Court awarded claimants &150.
