0 (We are not responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.) BOROUGH LOAN PROPOSALS. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln view of the voto to be taken for a further loan I wish to enter a a protest against the extravagant methods of our Councillors in permit/ting and, authorising what appears to some ratepayers at least, lavish expenditure. Who amongst out Councillors would sanction tor their own business the hiring of a conveyance and pay a labourer to drive them from place to place, when a few pounds would purchase a turnout. 1 venture to slate the money wasted on t-his item alone during the last year would purchase three such vehicles. Clerks of work, foremen and engineers seem to be having a jolly lime at our expense, ft hat can be said to justify the action of the Council in its decision re the power house contractls it not suflicient to cause indignation, when it is known that three of the Councillors at least are personally interested and receive substantial benefits by blocking competition in such a manner as is unworthy of Councillors ? If the ratepayers are satisfied with these methods of extravagance, well and good, but, if dissatisfied, there is a good opportunity of restricting their powers by voting against lurther loans.—l am, etc., ANOTHER KATKPAYKR. (Our correspondent makes a serious charge when he says that at least three of the Councillors arc personally interested in the power house contract. Why not name them, so that there shall he no mistake in the public mind ?--Ed.')
