New Plymouth Technical School
Under date of the 18th inst. the Education Department has replied to the Board's letter -asking for apporval of the ground plan of the proposed technical school, ft is ;su-j!gest-cd that a building containing rooms for cookery, science and general purposes (viz. dressmaking, drawing, etc.), and that workshops separated from the above lie built for woodwork and plumbing. The rooms that j are (questioned by the Department are the room for dressmaking and the demonstration or lecture room. "We may," reported Mr Spencer, Chief Inspector, to Wednesday's meeting of the Board, "be able to use the room for general purposes, for dressmaking, drawing, etc., but at the same time it would be rather inconvenient. It was not expected that the Government would put up the lecture room, but in accordance with t(he wiste of the committee set, up last year it was included and could have been built out of the grant from the borough had this been forthcoming. The Department asks also if the demand for technical classes in New Plymouth and the neighbourhood is such as to warrant the eiwtjon of the proposed building, anil I expect that in a few days information can be forwarded, as forms of application for the formation of classes have teen widely circulated. It is hoped, therefore, that all who wish the formation of technical elasses will make early -application in l order that the building may be proceeded with so as to be available next year." The inspector added that the prospects of the success of the class were so far very promising. Gas has been installed in three rooms at the Central School.
