The report was adopted. ! —Architect's Kcpo.'t.— ' The nichitect (Mr Jas. Sanderson, ■ rcporti'l the completion of the Makahu School building, 1 and said that !ha contractor Jtad turned out a good job. Tho pwinjting stnd repairs 1 at the Oni|atia Scfabol nM residence I had 'ih-'ii completed. The additions to the Fitzroy School were now coin- ' pleted. The contractor was entitled ' to the'balance of contract money and some small extras had been authorised. All the painting would lx> Com pleted this week. Plans had been prepared for a proposed resilience nt I Mahoe for the Hfojwrtmont, and tcn- - dels for the Mangaroa and Mntiere Schools and additions to the Mahoe ' School woujd. close on -the 20th. Applications by the Hell Hl,ork, Car, dirt, Lepperton, and Central School Committees for minor repairs at their ! respective Mchools were referred to the finance committee with power to uct. The matter of fencidp at tho Stratford Technic i\l School was left in tho hands of the architect with power to act, hjo reporting that the Work done was not satisfactory. Tenders tor the Mangaroa, Matiere, and Mahoe Schools were referred to Messrs Adlam, Maunder, and Wade, with power to act. —Miscellaneous.— Mr Monkhouse's report on repairs at ili£ Pembroke Koad School w n s received, and ordered to be given effect to. It was agreed to inform the Cental School Committee ithat the Board would make the connections with the public sewer when it was in m position to liiake the alterations to the out-offices.

—A Capitation Matter.— Mr C. D. Hole waited on tire Hoard, on behalf'of the Stratford School Committee, with reference to a reduction of £32 per annum in capitation, since the sewage connection had Jreen made. He styled that with the reduction it would be absolutely impossible for- the' committee to carry on. If the Board thought they could carry on with the reduced capitation the committee were quite wilting to hand over the financial control to the Board. The Chairman pointed out that when sewage connections were made the cost of administration on the committee |was considerably lessoned. This had been the basis 011 which the reduction had been made. He further sjya-ted that the Board's capitation was more liberal than ihat of any other Board in the colony. After further discussion, Mr Monkhouse gave notice that at next meetwig he would move for the amendment of clause 7, which deals with the scale of assistance to school funds. To the sub-clause, "Where any school is connected with an efficient sewage system the rate to be paid to committees shall,be 9d per head less than the ablovc rates," Mr -Monkhouse proposed to add, "Or such less sum as shall be equal to the net saving to the school committees through the water and sewage connections'." —Rcsefves.— Tins Chairman and Mr Fault reported on several reserves, recommending three tenancies on various conditions. £ The recommendations were adopt- ( ed. ( The Reserves Committee was autli- ( orised to empower one of its members to visit and report on school sites as the committee might see necessary.

—Teachers' Salaries.— Mr Maunder obtained leave to reintroduce his motion, previously defeated, declaring the present system of payment of salaries upon average attendance unjust and unsatisfactory and in favour of all teachers being Shaded with a minimum anii maximum salary to each grade, the gradi«K to be upon length of service, ability to teach, and literary tainments.The motion, which is similar to onn already carried by tho Wanganui fsoard, will be considered at next , meeting. •^Pcliiions.— In regard to a petition from Okato, signed"% five householders, n> warding friction between the parents of some of the scholars and the teacher (Mr Boyce), a reply was received from the local School Committ\it stating that one oi tl>i five ac-

knowledgcd that he had never read the petition, and two of the signatories had no children in Mr. Boyec's department. The commit/tee acknowledge! that there was friction between the master and some of the parents, 'the Board decided that there was not sufficient cause for acceding to tiie lc.quest of the petitioners that the headmaster be removed from Okato. i A petition was received from the presidents and householders of Whitijanga and Ohura Roads, asking for a I transfer of the Whangamomona School on the ground that the present site was not sufficiently central and other reasons. The Whangainomona Central School Committee 'wrote protesting against any such removal on the ground that it would only mean a considerable loss instead of gain to the attendance. The committee also urged upon the Board the immediate nc- , cessity of sending the architect to report on a school residence. A counter petition to the Wbitianga one was submitted by the Whangamomona parents. Both lots of petitioners forwarded lists of scholars. The matter was deferred for re-

port. Messrs Mackay and Morton were 1 granted an extension of time to report on the Derby Road petition, and that relating to York Road was also submitted to them. A letter from the Kohuratahe settlers with reference to a school in the hall was referred to Mr Monkhouse for report. —Uncertificated Teacher.— A petition from a number of residents of Pembroke Road that a certificated teacher be appointed was fefcrred to tiho local committee. It was also decided that a copy of the petition be forwarded to the present teacher for his remarks. —An Unauthorised Sale.— It was decided to thank Mr Moi. for his letter regarding the Board'; Wire that had been sold from tnt l'ututawa school site, and that unless the wire be returned or its full valnr paid within fourteen days, those re--1 sponsible for the sale of the Board's ! properly will be proceeded against.

—Maintenance Grant.— In reference to a letter from the North Canterbury Education board, tire following motion was carried :~ "That the Board is satisfied with the general principle ot the present allocation o[ the building maintenance grant,"(but feels that a wider limit than 7 per cent, should he allowed, and recommends 15 per cent." -Half-time Schools.— It was decided to inform the Punewh-akau Committee that, the present arrangement of half-time schools was only temporary there, and that the Board hoped that the average attendance at Makahu and I'unewhakau would be sufficient to attach a teacher for each staff. —School Committees.— Messrs Dunn and Lawn were appointed Commissioners for the Ngaire School District, to act in placo of a school committee. The appointment of the following members to complete school committees was confirmed Pungarehu, Mr W. Harvey ; Rahotu, Mr Raynor, in the place of Mr Barker, resigned.
