1N TEH-COLLEGIATE MATCH. (Pet Press Association.) WANfIANUI, July 25. The football l match .between Lincoln College and Wonganui College took i laic to-day. I'lay was very even, and resulted in a win lor Wan- ( giuuii )).v 8 points ta goal from a try and a try) to 8 (a try). A vi ry hi.'avy hailstorm prevailed during the second spoil.

JOCKEYS AND TRAINERS v. PUBLICANS. The best match of the year from the point of view, at any rate, of those spectators imbued with >' sense of the humourous, was that which took place at t-iic raiTCoui.s-' on Thursday, when the Jockeys and Trainers combattcd for supremacy with the Hotclkeepcvs. There was quite a crowd assembled to witness the gladiatorial struggle. As indicated, the game was worth going a lor.g way to sec, and the rules of Rugby were interpreted in a fearful and wonderful way. The turfites were seen to have the turn of foot, but the men of beer had abundant adipose

tissue, and the bulkier of the party used their weight well to overcome their smaller adversaries. Time and again the "jocks" put in promising trial gallops, only to he downed' when coming up the straight. The scrums were something to marvel at, and when the men of girth pushed all before them and the whole mass fell in a struggling heap, it was woe betide the undermost. The referee, Mr George Griffith, was frequently lost in the surging perspiring crowd. Finally, Williams broke away and scored the first try for the racing disciples. Johnson, the skipper, failed in a gallant effort to convert. The

badly "pumped" men renewed the con-test with- vim after the interval, Cochrane, playing something that must 'be a new game ot footlball which he intends to patent, made a bolt for the horizon, but failed to negotiate a stout obstacle in -the shape of Frank Sorrel!. Johnson did a bit of sleepl-eclyasiug reminiscent of his Grand National exploits, but was an "also started." Then Monty Julian, who showed some staying power, sut off for the line and was successful. This 'equalised matters, bui Frank Julian (skipper) in his kick failed to breast the-"'bar." A dangerous dribble by the jockeys was foiled by the heavy weight back falling upon and ■crushing his opponent. It was about this point that one well-known boniface in the forward lines touched the ball for the , first and only time. When time was called the score was 3 all, but as ■ finality was desired h was decided to 1 play a quarter of an hour longer, a shower of rain having freshened up I '.lie fainting ones. A try by Johnson • who had too much pace for the hlockaders, gave the victory to the Jockeys and Trainers by 6 points to I 3.

In the evening the losers entertained the victors at a social gathering held at the sample rooms in Egmont Street. The chair was taken by- Mr R. Pardy, and there was a Mg muster. With refreshments, toasts, and songs, etc., an enjoyable convivial time was spent. Amongst those who contributed to the programme were Messrs It. Morcy (piano), Me Alpine, L. Russell, Cooper, H. Williams, Elder, S. Allen, Maar, Rowan and Cody. On Tuesday night H. Abbott,, the Star skipper, received a telegram from the selector for the New Zealand rep. team to tour England, asking if he can go to England, it selected.
