Francis George wr'jjg- a -bottle gatherer, was charged this morning with having 0 n July 13 committed manslaughter of his wife. Kebccca Grigg. in that bv wilful neglect he accelerated her death Mr S. Mays, cfrt b"hali of tine Crown Solicitor, informed the Court that the primary cause of the woman's death was the breaking down of the lun«s owing to the formation „f abscesses. The doctor's evidence went to show thit her life would not only have been prolonged to a wry great extent, hut there was a f*ir amount of probability that it might have been saved. In addition to that thero was no cooked or uncooked food in the house which could have been given to deceased in her then state of health, and above that there was a most tofiescribablo state of filth, while ordinary budclothing was absv»it. H was a lamentable case, fortunately rare. Accused had given various accounts to the neighbours as to his wife's state of health and another story at the Inquest. By Crown evidence tnere was almost a suggestion that accused did the thing designedly, So repufsire was the evidence. Evidence for .the prosecution was about to be given by Dr, Keith, when Mr Skelton intimated that half a dozen witnesses might be Called for the defence in the Lower Court. They were not present, and he might require an adjournment n.t a later stage. Mr Mays suggests Oiaf under the circumstapices rt woukt be better to adjourn the v'nolo hearing for a week, and the Magistrate concurred. The wsc accordingly was set down for Monday next.
