THE "COACH" DIFFERENCE., SOME STRONG COMMENTS. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 11. The appointment of a coach to the New Zealand football team was discussed at a meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union. The Chairman said lie was satisfied from opinions expressed by players that the presence of Duncan as coach would be an element of discord,, but whether the Management Committee should be hampered on the eve of the departure of the team, was a matter ior very cartful consideration. The Secretary remarked that the easiest solution of the difficulty would be for Duncan to "pull out," The Chairman : "Those of us behind the scenes know he is very unpopular with players." . Mr Evans said tncy had to consider the possibility of the resignation of the Management Committee, whose services New Zealand football could not afford to lose, although the committee had done wrong in the matter of the appointment of a coach. He did not think they should go against them.

Mr Walton spoke in a similar strain, and added that Duncan was absolutely the last man who should ;have been chosen as a coach, if a jCuuu was necessary. With very j'great reluotir.ee lie would mow;: "That the Union's delegate be in-

structcd to support the Management Committee in sending Duncan, but at the same time to express the opinion of the' Union- that their action in sending Duncan as coach is ill-advis-ed."

After rescinding the previous resolutions instructing the delegate not. to vole 011 the subject, at all, the

above motion was carried unanimously. Mr Walton suggested that in the event of the resignation of the Main ageiuent Committee the Union's delegate should be instructed to move (hat the headquarters of the New Zealand Union be removed to Christchurch, but it was pointed out that there would be ample opportunity to do this after tile committee actually resigned.
