Stratford first Juniors wil" play oft* with Waininte at Manaia on Thursday next. Eltliam Second .Juniors and Stratford will decile the Northern championship at Stratford. . INTER-'VARSITY MATCH. The first match between Otago University and Victoria College was played at Wellington on Saturday. The game was lull of mistakes, and he efforts to handle the greasy, ball were at times ludicrous. Ncvcrthc'ess, there wero many interesting passages. University won by 13 lo 0.
WELLINGTON v. WAIRARAPA. The annual match between Wellington and Wairarapa was played at 4i ..u'ion on Saturday, and resulted in a victory for the city team by i.'i points to 11, after a game which was chiefly remarkable for the sterling attack made by the visitors in .ne last fifteen minutes. When tbi teams lined up a drenching downpour uad commenced. The ground was soon thoroughly soaked, and it offer. (Ed little resistance to the churning process it was put through in the neat fifteen minutes. By that time it was as slippery, as an ice patch, and the wonder was that the contest produced the display it did. At halftime Wairarapa looked winners all the way, but the black men attacked determinedly, and during the last fliteen minutes made the score oi 11 -3 read 13--11. A lucky kick bj, George Spencer, which touched the bar and toppled over, was responsible for the two points which gave the-victory. All the forwards worked well on both sides. The backs had a rough road to travel. At first the Wellington men were shaping poorly, but lliey improved as play progressed, and, outside some very bad passing, which was almost wholly air tributable to the greasy state of Mie ball, not a great deal of fault could be found with them. Wriglcy, Logan and J. O'Leary were the pick of the Wairarapa rearguard.
WELLINGTON v. HOROWHENUIA.
This match was played at Wercroa (Levin!) and resulted in a victory for Wellington by the narrow margin of one point, the score being 9 to 8. Eleven of the country players were Maoris and half-castes.
Thus Referee in the Dunedin Star : At most matches it is not unusual to hour tliu barracker* falling "Lot the bull out," or some similar advice. I wonder how many ••{ them nave, ever boon packed in a scnun.and felt just what it means to be ia.m.med hard, and quite unable to iiiov«, hand or loot, even although one littlo tap would send the ball out to thtf half, who, seeing;, perhaps, the ono opportunity of the match is calling for it, at the top of i'c|is yoicj. Quito a lot of "barrackers" advice" comes within the same fatuous category. 'llhjere is, by way of cue more example, ihe oft-heard "advice" to '•make it looso" or "pnakje it tight," jnat'lis if, when anything goes wrong ■'with a team, nothing is wanted! to set it' right Jjpyond the mere mention. It is perhaps not generally known than, some seemingly simple deflclcnci-.-s in football teams, so far from beii ■» capable of rectification by a won.', actually ifftpiire weeks of thought- and practice to put right. And jet everybody seems to find it easy—everybody except tft« poor player.
