Illness of Mr E. M. Smith.
k SERIOUS CONDITION. News of the serious illness of Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R. lor the district, was received with much con-■-■c.rn in town oni Monday. It seems that Mr Smith was first takon ill at 4.30 a.m. on Monday, when ho awoke feeling vqry faint und unwell. I symptom being tho extreme irregiilarity of the heart's action. Mrs Smith administered restoratives and the sufferer, improving, went off to sleep. Subsequently, however, his condition took a serious turn, and hemonhage from tihe mouth supervened, ascribwl lo the breaking of a olofid vessel. Dr. McCleland wa« urgently summoned, and l*r. Fookes was also tailed in. So serious was Mr Smith's coalition that the doctors were in attendance for two hours. In tho afternoon the patient made a slight improvement, and the later bulletins issued in response to numerous inquiries were more hop<V•ul. Mr Smith had made arrangements to leave for Wellington on Monday. Tho visit was, of crfurse, had to be indefinitely postponed, and a telegram, was despatched lo Mr Jennings, M.H.11., explaining tfnje circumstances. At a late hour last night no change in Mr Smith's condition was dicceJ'jiifble.
