Fatal Riding Accident
An inquest' concerning the death of William Luman, of Tarato, carrier, who died in the hospital on Thursday moiling, w a s held at the Courthouse on Friday before the S.M. and the following jury :—Messrs George Hoby (foreman), T. A. Kivell, J.Elliott, George Griffiths,, William S. Hart and Peter Koss. Mrs Lumian gave evidence of identification, and said the deceased was 54 years of ago at the time of his death. Br. Leath|a,m, medical superintendent, deposed that the deceased was admitted to the hospital an. Fob. 19, suffering from fracture of the spinal column at the root of the neck, which caused almost Complete paralysis. William Graham Crozier, settler, of jVata, gave evidence that on Sun-* day morning-. Fell. 19, it was arranges to give a horse belonging to witness a trial on the Tara-ta racecourse. The horse was to do a mlilo and a half spin, and to be brought home from the half-mile post by Luman, mounted on one of his own horses. The deceased' was skilled amongst horses, and had previously ridden on the racecourse without accident. As arranged, deceased joined in the trial at the half-mile, but his nforso was only able to get up to the other a quarters. Coming to a dip in the course, by some means deceased s horse fell, and witiwsh 1 jockey as he came up, notified witltes of the fac.ll Deceased was picked up in » be.pl«M Condition, anli, on the advice p.,-1 ?? Ihe deceased, subsequently stated at the hospital that he could not understand how tho accident happened A verdict to the effect that death was due to injuries resulting f,. om the acciddt* was returned.
